Why information about my family history of Hypertension, Diabetes, surgery or hospitalisation due to eye problems, social history and current medications important while conducting eye examination?

Yes it is important to get the information mentioned above as these have direct linkage with eye health and in some cases with the refractive status of the eye.

The reason for review of body’s systems is that the bodily systems are inter-related and that the eyes may be affected by what is going on elsewhere. As far as the eyes are concerned, high blood pressure and diabetes are of particular importance as both these conditions have direct impact on the eye health and it is important to monitor them

Family history is particularly important with respect to conditions like glaucoma , macular degeneration, retinal tears or detachment, strabismus (squint), amblyopia (lazy eye), hypertension (High BP), and diabetes as the person has higher likelihood of either suffering from them or being at a higher risk group.

Social history is all about understanding the patient’s occupation and hobbies as these are important with respect to their visual requirements. Many times their complaints are centered on the demands of their job or hobby.
